The most common question we get is not about wood or color. It is about size. A family name sign that looks great in a photo can land too small on a wide wall or crowd a narrow one, and the photo never tells you which.
Here is the short version. For an entryway or a spot above a light switch, a sign around 18 to 24 inches wide reads well without taking over. Above a sofa, a bed, or a mantel, you want more presence, usually 28 to 40 inches, so the sign holds the wall instead of floating in the middle of it. A good rule is to aim for roughly two thirds the width of the furniture underneath.
Height matters too, but less. Most family name signs are wider than they are tall, so once the width is right, the height tends to follow. If you are hanging it on its own with nothing below, give it a little more size than you think, because empty wall around a sign makes it look smaller than it is.
A trick that costs nothing: cut a piece of paper or cardboard to the size you are considering and tape it to the wall for a day. Walk past it a few times. You will know within an afternoon whether it feels right, and it saves the one regret that is hard to fix after a sign is made.
