What to Put on a Star Map for a Baby's Birth (Most People Put Too Much)

Aydan
Custom star map on glass showing the night sky at a specific date, time and location

A birth star map is the easiest star map to get right on the sky and the easiest to get wrong on the words. The time is on a hospital bracelet, so nobody argues about the hour. Then they try to fit the entire birth announcement onto a piece of glass, and the sky that was supposed to be the point disappears under text.

I plot star maps for a living, and birth maps are a growing share of what I make, mostly ordered by grandparents for the new parents. Here is what belongs on one, what does not, which location to use, and when to order it.

Why is a birth star map different from an anniversary star map?

Two reasons. First, the time is exact. An anniversary map is usually plotted for an evening, and people agonize over whether the first kiss was at nine or eleven. A birth has a minute on a document, and a map plotted for 3:14 a.m. is a different sky than one plotted for 7:00 p.m. the same day, because the earth has turned. I explained the mechanics in how we plot the exact night sky. The short version: we plot what was above the hospital at that minute, whether or not it was dark out.

Second, the map is for a person who was not there in any meaningful sense. An anniversary map is a memory. A birth map is a record. That changes what should be written on it, because the child will read it at eight, fifteen, and thirty, and the text has to hold up for all three.

What goes on a birth star map?

Four things, and that is the limit.

The name. First name, or first and middle. Not the full legal name with the last name; that is what the birth certificate is for, and it makes the map read like a form.

The date. Written out, not numeric. "March 3, 2026" ages better than "03/03/26" and is not ambiguous outside the US.

The time. The exact minute, because it is the one thing about a birth map that is not approximate, and it is the detail people stop and read.

The place. The city, not the hospital name. "Denver, Colorado" and the coordinates under it. More on the location question below.

One short line under those, if you want it. "The night you arrived." "Hello, world." "The sky the night we met you." One line. If you find yourself writing a second sentence, stop.

What does not belong on it?

The weight and the length. I know they are on every announcement, and they are the first thing people try to add. They do not belong on a star map because a star map is about a sky, and "7 lbs 4 oz" is not about a sky. It also dates the piece as an announcement, and announcements get retired. Put the stats on a birth stats sign, which is the piece built for them; I covered that in what goes on a birth stats sign.

The hospital name. It turns the place into an institution. The doctor's name, the parents' full names, a Bible verse and a quote and the name meaning: all of it competes with the sky. The map is the gift. The text is a caption.

Which location: the hospital or home?

The hospital's city, because that is where the sky was. The coordinates will be within a few miles of home for most people, and the difference in the chart is invisible, but the honest answer is the place of birth. If it was a home birth, use the house, and use the house coordinates, because that is the map the parents will care most about.

The one exception: if the family lives in a different city from the hospital and the parents feel strongly about home, use the home city and coordinates. The chart will differ by a hair. The meaning is theirs to decide.

Where does it hang, and what size?

Not above the crib. Nothing framed hangs above a crib. The birth star map goes on the wall beside the changing table, over the dresser, or beside the nursery door where the parents see it at 2 a.m.

Our star map prints on acrylic glass with a solid wood frame, which matters in a nursery: it wipes clean and it does not have a paper face to fade or ripple. Three sizes. The 12 by 16 inch at $49.90 is the nursery size; it fits beside a door or above a dresser and it moves to a bedroom later without looking small. The 13 by 19 at $79.90 is for a hallway outside the room. The 20 by 28 at $119.90 is too large for most nurseries and is the size for a living room piece, which some families do want. See the star map on glass, and the rest of the star and moon maps.

Should you order it before the baby comes?

No. This is the one personalized baby gift that should wait, because the time and the date are the point, and due dates are guesses. I have remade maps for parents who ordered on the due date and delivered nine days later, and the second map is the one that counts.

If you are shopping for a baby shower, buy the nursery name sign instead, since the name is usually settled by then and the sign does not need a date. The nursery name signs and the rest of the baby shower gifts are built for before. The star map is built for after. It is made to order, ships in 1 to 2 business days, and is usually in hand within about 3 to 5 days, which is fast enough to order the week the baby is born and have it on the wall before the grandparents visit.

Who buys a birth star map, and for whom?

Mostly grandparents, for the parents. Sometimes a partner, for the mom, as the gift that is not flowers at the hospital. Sometimes the parents for themselves, a year later, when the nursery is finally finished.

For twins, two maps of the same sky with different names, or one map with both names. The two map version is the one I would pick, because the maps go to two bedrooms eventually and the children do not have to split a sky.

Whoever buys it, the rule holds: the time is exact, the text is short, and the sky is the gift.
