Established Date vs. Wedding Date: What Should Actually Go on Your Sign

Aydan's Unique Finds
Personalized wood family name sign with established date in clean type

Every personalization field has a date slot, and people freeze on it for a minute. 'Est. 2020' or '06.13.2020' or 'Together since 2014' all feel similar but they're saying different things. Here's the actual difference.

What 'Est.' means

'Est.' is short for 'Established.' On a family name sign, it traditionally refers to the year a family was founded. For couples, that's almost always the wedding year. So 'The Johnsons, Est. 2020' is shorthand for 'the Johnson family was established by marriage in 2020.'

The convention is borrowed from business signage. Old businesses put 'Est. 1924' on their storefronts to communicate longevity. Family signs picked up the same convention because it works the same way. A family is a kind of small institution, and 'Est.' reads as quietly proud of its history.

What the full wedding date does differently

'06.13.2020' is more specific. It pins the sign to one day, the day of the ceremony. That specificity reads as more recent and more personal. For a couple in their first two or three years of marriage, the full date still feels like an event. By year five, the full date starts to read like a fact rather than an event, and the year alone does the same emotional work with less visual clutter on the sign.

'Together since' is its own thing

Some couples lived together for years before getting married. For these couples, 'Est. 2020' (wedding year) understates the actual length of the relationship. 'Together since 2014' acknowledges that.

You can also combine them: 'Together since 2014, Married 2020.' This is a long line for a sign and only works on bigger pieces, but for couples whose pre-marriage years were a real chapter, the doubled date tells the full story.

Which one to pick

Here's the decision framework I'd use.

Pick 'Est. [year]' if you want the sign to age well. 'Est. 2020' looks the same in 2030 as it did in 2021. It's timeless.

Pick the full date ('06.13.2020') if you're still in the honeymoon stretch (first three years) and the day itself still feels alive. The full date is more emotional but also more dated as time passes.

Pick 'Together since [year]' if your relationship length and marriage length are very different and the relationship length is what you want to honor.

Skip the date entirely if you're using a wedding location instead, like 'John & Sarah, Lake Como.' A location can do the same anchoring work as a date and is sometimes more evocative.

A note on formatting

For full dates, formatting affects readability a lot.

06.13.2020 reads clean and modern, but Americans and Europeans read it differently (Americans read it as June 13, Europeans read it as 6 March 2020).

June 13, 2020 is unambiguous but takes more horizontal space on the sign.

13.06.2020 is unambiguous internationally but reads as European.

If the sign is staying in your home and your guests are mostly American, dot format works fine. If anyone reading the sign might be European, write the month out.

Address signs are different

One thing to flag because it confuses people: address signs (the kind with your house number and street name) usually don't get an Est. date at all. They're functional pieces, not commemorative ones. If you're ordering an address plaque for the front of your house, leave the wedding date off and let the address do the work.

What I'd put on a sign right now

If I were ordering a sign tomorrow, I'd go with 'Est. 2020' for a couple in their first decade and 'Since 2014' or just the location for couples whose stories are bigger than the wedding day.

The thing nobody tells you: a wrong date on a sign is not catastrophic. The sign will still hang on the wall, the family will still know what it means. So if you're freezing on this choice, pick one and move on. The piece itself matters more than the format of the date.

If you want to browse what's available, the family name signs collection is here and most pieces support all three formats. Everything ships in 1-2 business days from Spring, Texas.
