How to Order a Personalized Sign When You're Bad at Picking Designs

Aydan's Unique Finds

Some buyers spend three hours comparing fonts on a $90 sign. Others stare at the personalization screen for twenty minutes and close the tab. The problem isn't the sign. It's that the design decisions feel high-stakes for people who don't have strong opinions about typography.

If you fall into either group, here's the version of the order process that takes the decisions off the table.

The frame that helps

Most design choices for a personalized sign matter less than you think. The piece will look fine in almost any combination of reasonable choices. The actual difference between 'this sign is okay' and 'this sign is great' is rarely about the font you picked. It's about the personalization being accurate and the materials being good.

If you can get the personalization right and the materials right, you can default everything else and still end up with a great piece.

The defaults that work for nearly every situation

For when you don't want to think about choices, pick these:

Wood type: birch. Birch is the safest pick. Clean, pale, takes engraving sharply, ages well, fits almost every interior style.

Font: clean serif. Garamond, Caslon, or any standard serif font. Reads as classical, ages well, works for any name.

Size: 14-16 inches for most uses. Big enough to read, small enough to fit any wall.

Finish: matte or natural. Avoid glossy finishes; they create reflections that fight with the design.

Text format: first names plus 'Est. [year].' Works for couples, ages well, doesn't lock you into a specific decade aesthetic.

This combination produces a sign that will look right in any room. It's the default for a reason.

For wedding gifts specifically

If the order is a wedding gift for someone else and you don't know their style:

14-inch birch sign, serif font, 'John & Sarah, Est. 2025' format, matte finish. About $80.

This combination has the highest hit rate across recipients because it doesn't commit to any specific interior style. It works in farmhouse, modern, traditional, eclectic homes equally.

For anniversary gifts

14-inch wood plaque (birch or pine, your choice), serif font, names plus the wedding date (year only is fine), matte finish. About $80.

The anniversary sign default is almost identical to the wedding gift default. The piece is meant to commemorate the marriage; the simpler the design, the better it ages with the marriage.

For housewarming gifts

16-inch sign with the new family's address or coordinates, plus the move-in date. Birch or pine, serif font.

The address piece doesn't require any design opinions from you because the personalization is the address.

For Mother's Day or family gifts

14-inch wood plaque with the mom's name and her children's names underneath. Birch, serif font. About $80.

The personalization (names) does the emotional work; the design is just the vehicle.

How to handle the font choice if you must

If the listing forces a font choice and you don't know which to pick, here's the shortcut:

Pick serif if you want the sign to feel classical or traditional.

Pick sans-serif if you want it to feel modern or minimalist.

Don't pick script for anything longer than two names. Script gets hard to read.

Don't pick display fonts unless you specifically want the sign to feel themed (cabin, vintage, rustic). Display fonts date faster than serif or sans-serif.

If you genuinely can't decide between serif and sans-serif, pick serif. Serif is the safer default for personalized pieces in most homes.

How to handle the size question

If you don't know what size, the rule that usually works:

For a wall the recipient hasn't picked yet, default to 14-16 inches. This size fits the most spaces.

For a wall you've seen and you know is small (over a small console, in a hallway), 12 inches.

For a wall you've seen and you know is large (above a sofa, in a foyer), 20-24 inches.

If you don't know the wall, default to medium. Smaller pieces fit more places than larger pieces do.

What to do about color

For wood signs, the color is largely the wood itself. Birch is pale, pine is honey, walnut is dark.

If you're picking between stained options (the same wood in different stains), default to natural or light. Natural wood ages well; trendy stains lock the piece to a specific era.

If you're picking between painted options (white painted vs natural wood vs colored), pick natural wood unless you have a specific reason. Painted finishes fit fewer rooms than natural wood.

The 'I just want to order something' approach

If you've been on the listing for twenty minutes and you're stuck, here's the move:

Pick the default size offered (usually the middle size, often 14 or 16 inches).

Pick the most-shown font in the listing photos.

Type the personalization carefully.

Click add to cart.

The piece will be fine. The choices you didn't make won't matter to the recipient. The personalization you got right is what matters.

When to actually slow down

Some choices do matter and deserve attention:

The personalization text. Confirm spellings, dates, and formats. This is the one thing you can't fix after the piece is made.

The shipping address. Especially for gifts going somewhere other than your home.

The arrival date if you have a deadline. Confirm with the maker that the timeline works.

Everything else (font, size, finish details) can mostly be defaulted without consequence.

The honest version

The buyers who agonize over design choices for personalized signs usually end up no happier than the buyers who picked defaults and moved on. The piece is going to look fine either way.

Save the decision energy for the personalization (which actually matters) and the recipient (who actually cares). The font you pick is between you and the maker. Nobody else is going to evaluate your typography choices.

If you want to browse with simple defaults already applied, the family name signs collection is here. Most pieces have sensible default settings; you just pick the size and add the personalization. Everything ships in 1-2 business days from Fairfield, New Jersey.
