The modern theme for year twenty-nine is furniture. Not a metal, not a stone, not a flower. Furniture. Somewhere along the way a list-maker decided the twenty-ninth anniversary should be marked by going out and buying something for the house, and that entry has stood ever since as the least romantic line in the entire tradition.
There is no traditional gift for twenty-nine, the same as twenty-six, twenty-seven and twenty-eight. The old list went from silver at twenty-five to pearl at thirty and left the four years between blank. Furniture is a modern filling for one of those blanks, and I suspect it was chosen because someone needed to write something.

Garnet, and where the name comes from
The stone for twenty-nine is garnet, which is also year two's stone, so a couple hitting twenty-nine is meeting it for the second time. The name comes from the Latin granatum, meaning pomegranate, because the deep red crystals look like the seeds. Once you know that you cannot unsee it.
Garnet is not always red, which surprises people. It occurs in green, orange, pink and a colour-changing variety, but the red is what the tradition means. The colour for the year follows it: a dark, slightly brown red, closer to oxblood than to scarlet. It is a good colour in a room and a difficult one in jewellery, which tells you something about which direction to take it.

Taken literally, furniture is a bad gift category for an anniversary. A chair is a household purchase. Nobody unwraps a side table and feels seen.

Most anniversary gifts are objects that arrive and then have to find somewhere to live. Furniture, whatever else it is, is part of the room by definition.
Which points at wall pieces sized and finished to match what is already there. Not a statement object fighting the room, but something that reads as though it was always meant to be on that wall. At twenty-nine years the house has a settled palette. Working with it is the move.
Practically: match the wood tone to the furniture rather than to the piece you like best in isolation. A walnut-toned sign over oak furniture reads as a mistake, and it is the single most common thing people get wrong. If the room is oak, order oak-toned. If it is walnut, go darker. A star map at about ninety dollars is the piece that most often gets described back to me as the one they did not expect to care about. The reason is the specificity. It is not a picture of stars, it is the actual arrangement of the sky over one place at one hour on one night, which means it cannot be bought for anyone else.
But I would still hold that idea for thirty. It works better as the milestone gift than as the year-before gift, and at thirty you can go larger with it.
What I would skip
Actual furniture, unless you have been told exactly which piece. Buying a chair for someone who did not choose it is a bet against twenty-nine years of accumulated taste, and it is a bet you will lose.
Anything themed on the number twenty-nine. In twelve months it becomes a slightly sad reminder that the big one has passed.
