What to Get for a 32nd Wedding Anniversary (Conveyances, the Strangest Entry on the List)

The modern anniversary list says the gift for year 32 is conveyances. Vehicles. Transportation. I did not believe this the first time I read it, so I checked three sources, and yes, the official suggestion for a 32nd wedding anniversary is, essentially, a car.

Nobody is buying their spouse a car because a list said so. The entry dates from the mid-century era when the list was padded out by American retailers and an automobile was the ultimate aspirational purchase. It made sense in 1957. It reads like a joke now, and as a result year 32 might be the single most ignored anniversary on the entire list. Even year 44, which is groceries, at least gets a laugh.

But I make personalized things for a living, and I have come to think conveyances is secretly one of the better themes, if you read it sideways.

What a conveyance actually is

A conveyance is whatever carried you. By year 32, a marriage has been carried by a lot of things. The rusted hatchback from the broke years. The minivan that survived three kids and one dog. The moving trucks. The flights to a new city for a job that did or did not work out. The route between two apartments before the wedding, driven so many times it is still in muscle memory.

The theme is not really about vehicles. It is about distance covered together. And distance, it turns out, is something you can put on a wall.

The addresses gift

The most requested version of this idea in my shop is coordinates. Every home a couple has shared, each one reduced to its latitude and longitude, listed in order. A couple at 32 years typically has four to seven addresses, which happens to be exactly the range that fits on a sign without the lettering shrinking into decoration. I wrote a separate guide on finding your coordinates if you do not know where to start; the short version is that any maps app will hand them to you in ten seconds per address.

Two practical warnings from experience. First, agree as a family on what counts as a home. I have seen genuine disputes over whether a six-month sublet belongs on the list. Second, double check the coordinates before you order. A flipped digit puts your first apartment in the ocean, and while I catch the obvious ones, I do not know your life.

The journey, drawn

If the couple moved across states or countries, a map takes the same story and makes it visual. A canvas piece with the cities marked and connected reads like a route, which is the whole point of the theme. For couples who stayed in one town for all 32 years, I do the opposite: one city map, one star, and the dates below it. Staying put for three decades is also a journey. Arguably the harder one.

If you want an actual object of transport

Some people want the theme taken literally, and there are decent ways to do it that cost less than a sedan. A framed print of the exact make and model of the car from the early years, with the license plate number if anyone remembers it. Model versions of a first car run $30 to $80 in decent quality diecast. I have also engraved a cutting board with the outline of a 1994 pickup for a wife whose husband still talks about it, and per her review, he laughed and then went quiet, which is the correct response to a good 32nd anniversary gift.

Sizes and money

A coordinates sign in wood at 12x24 inches suits a hallway, which is fitting for a gift about passage. Map canvases do better bigger, 18x24 and up, because the detail needs room. Expect $60 to $140 for personalized pieces in this range, and add production time of about a week before shipping, since everything is made to order. My general advice on ordering ahead applies double for a year nobody reminds you about.

In defense of the forgotten year

Year 32 sits in the shadow of nothing. There is no big milestone behind it or directly ahead, no party, no expectation. Which means a gift given on the 32nd carries a specific message: I remembered on a year when forgetting would have been completely fine. The theme handed to you by the list, absurd as it looks, is the story of everywhere you have been together. That is more than most milestone years get.

The full range of pieces I make for occasions like this is in the anniversary collection. Bring your addresses.
