A nursery name sign is usually the first custom piece a new parent orders, and it is ordered in a hurry, often the week before a baby shower. I make these signs, so this is the checklist I would use if I were buying one from anyone, including us. Seven things to check, in the order they cause problems.
1. Size, and the widest-name trap
Most listings quote a size for the sign, but the real footprint depends on the name. Charlotte and Ava at the same listed size are very different objects. Ask what the size refers to: the width of the whole piece, the height of the letters, or the widest name it can fit. Our themed signs, like the safari nursery name sign, are 28 by 13 inches with the name set inside the scene, so the footprint stays the same whatever the name. For a wall above a crib, 24 to 36 inches wide is the usual range. Measure the wall first and ask for a mockup if the name is long.
2. Wood and thickness
Nursery signs are often sold as wooden when they are thin engineered board with a printed face. Ask for the species and the thickness. Ours are cut from birch, in two layers for the 3D designs so the name sits proud of the background. As a rule, anything under a quarter inch will bow across a span wider than 16 inches, and delicate script letters cut from thin board snap in the box. If the listing does not state a thickness, that is the answer.
3. Paint and finish
A wall sign is not a toy, but it lives in a baby's room, so ask whether the paint is water based, whether the piece is sealed, and whether the back and edges are sanded. A good maker will answer in one message. If you are ordering from us, ask and we will tell you exactly what finish is on the piece you are ordering; there is no reason for a shop to be vague about this.
4. A proof before anything is cut
Custom signs are made to what you type. Capitalization, accents, hyphens and middle names all go through exactly as entered. On our site you see a live preview of the finished sign before you pay, which is the moment to check spelling. If a shop offers proofs only on request, request one, and make sure they will wait for your approval before cutting.
5. Hanging hardware and where it goes
Check what comes with the sign: sawtooth hangers, keyhole slots, D-rings, or nothing. Then place it sensibly. Above a crib, mount into a stud or use proper anchors, keep it above a standing toddler's reach, and do not rely on adhesive strips alone for anything heavier than a small cutout. If a sign has small detachable pieces, keep it away from the crib entirely.
6. Turnaround, and what happens if it arrives broken
Personalized signs take longer than people expect, and shower dates do not move. Ask for production time and shipping time separately. Ours are made to order and most arrive within 3 to 5 days including production, with no customs fees on US deliveries. If a piece arrives damaged or with a mistake we made, we remake it at no cost and do not ask for the original back. Whoever you buy from, confirm the damage policy before you order, because personalized items are usually not returnable for a change of mind.
7. Reviews with photos
Star ratings tell you little. Look for review photos that show the sign on a real wall, the thickness from the side, and how the paint looks up close. We have been making personalized signs since 2019, with more than 10,000 orders, and every product page shows verified reviews with customer photos.
Where to buy
Etsy has the widest variety and the most visible review counts, which is why it is the first place most people look. Independent shops give you a direct line to the person making the sign and usually a better preview tool. Amazon is fastest for generic designs but hardest to vet. We sell on all three; the site is where you get the live preview and a real person answering questions.
