A family name sign with an established date is the most ordered piece we make, and the one where buyers most often end up with the wrong material, the wrong size, or the wrong date. This is the checklist for getting it right, whether you order from us, from Etsy, or from a local woodworker.
Solid wood, MDF, or wood-look
Listings use the word wooden loosely. There are three things it can mean. Solid wood, which has grain, weight and lasts decades indoors. Plywood or engineered board, which is fine when it is thick enough and honestly described. And MDF or thin board with a printed wood-look face, which starts lifting at the corners within a few years. If the listing does not name the material and the thickness, assume the cheapest option. Our signs are cut from solid wood: the classic established family name sign and the monogram and cabin series are laser cut with engraved or raised lettering, and the patterned series such as whiskey barrel or terrazzo is UV printed directly onto solid wood rather than onto a laminate.
Engraved, raised or printed lettering
Engraving cuts the letters into the wood, so they stay legible after the finish dulls. Raised or 3D lettering is a second layer cut and mounted on top, which reads well from across a room and is the choice for a sign above a sofa or fireplace. Printed lettering is the most flexible for color and pattern and looks modern, but it is a surface finish, so keep it out of direct sun. Size for a living room
The most common mistake is ordering too small. Our standard size is 23 by 10 inches, which is the smallest that does not look accidental on its own stretch of wall. Above furniture, the sign should span roughly two thirds of the width of what sits under it: above a 60 inch console that is 23 by 13 inches, above a full sofa it is a wide horizontal piece of 36 inches or more. Wording and the established date
Decide three things before you type anything. First, The Millers or The Miller Family; names ending in s, x, z, ch or sh need care, since The Joneses is correct and The Jones's is not. Second, the date format: Est. 2018, Est. 06.14.2018 or Established 2018. Third, which date: the wedding date makes the sign about the marriage and survives a move, the move-in date makes it about the house. Proof, hardware, turnaround
- Proof. On our site you see a live preview of the exact sign, name and date included, before you pay. Whoever you buy from, do not order a personalized sign without seeing the layout first.
- Hanging. Ask what is on the back. A wide sign wants two hanging points or a keyhole slot, not a single small sawtooth hanger.
- Turnaround. Ours are made to order and most arrive within 3 to 5 days including production. If you are ordering for a date, say so in the order notes.
- Damage. If a sign arrives damaged or with a mistake we made, we remake it at no cost and do not ask for the original back. Personalized signs are otherwise not returnable for a change of mind, so check the policy anywhere you buy.
- Customs. US deliveries have no customs fees.
Etsy, Amazon or a small shop's own site
Etsy gives you the most styles and the most visible reviews, and it is a fine place to compare. Amazon is fastest and hardest to vet, since wooden often means thin board there. A maker's own site usually has the better preview tool and a person who answers questions the same day. We sell on all three; the signs are the same, the difference is the ordering experience.
