What to Get for a 23rd Wedding Anniversary (Silver Plate, the Dress Rehearsal Year)

The modern anniversary list has a strange sense of humor. For year twenty three it assigns silver plate. Not silver, that is reserved for twenty five. Silver plate. The material that looks like silver, costs less than silver, and is, in the most literal sense, a thin layer of the real thing over something else.

Whoever wrote that list was either being lazy or making a sly joke about the two year countdown to the big one. Either way, I make personalized gifts for a living, and I refuse to sell anyone the almost version of a gift they are going to give for real in twenty four months.

The countdown problem

Year twenty three lives inside the gravitational pull of twenty five. The party ideas have started. Maybe the trip is being discussed. And that pull creates a specific trap: every gift between now and then risks becoming a preview. A smaller silver thing now, the real silver thing later. A nice dinner now, the real celebration later.

The trouble with previews is they tell the current year it does not fully count. Twenty three years of marriage counts. That is a kid raised to adulthood, a mortgage mostly beaten, a couple that has renegotiated who they are at least three times and stayed at the table for all of it.

The official details, for the record

There is no traditional gift for the 23rd on the old lists. The modern list says silver plate. The gemstone is imperial topaz, a warm orange gold stone, which frankly has more character than the metal. No standard flower.

How to give year 23 its own identity

My advice is to point the gift backward or sideways, anywhere but forward at the milestone. Twenty five will handle itself. Twenty three should be about the specific texture of now.

A star map of a date from this era of the marriage, not the wedding era. The night your last kid moved out. The night you signed for the cabin, or the little business, or whatever this decade's project has been. The wedding sky can wait for the silver year, when it will feel ceremonial. This year's sky should be one from this chapter. Around ninety dollars.

A timeline piece that ends with a blank spot. I have made a few of these and they get me every time. Five or six engraved milestones from twenty three years, with room left deliberately open. It says the record is still being written, which at year twenty three is exactly the right message.

A wood sign for the version of home you have now. Couples at this stage are often one move away from, or one year into, the smaller place or the dream place. A sixty five dollar engraved sign with the family name lands differently on a door you chose in your fifties than one you chose in your twenties. Better, usually.

If imperial topaz appeals to you, that warm amber color is genuinely lovely as an accent, in a stone, in a frame tone, in the stain of a wood piece. It is the one part of the official year twenty three package I would keep.

What I would skip

Anything silver colored. Not because it is wrong, but because you will want silver to feel new in two years, and the human eye keeps inventory. Anything purchased as part one of a two part plan. And skipping the year to save budget for twenty five, which is the most common move and the one I would push back on hardest. A modest gift now plus a great gift at silver beats one enormous gift preceded by two skipped years. Marriages run on the small deposits.
