What to Get for a 24th Wedding Anniversary (Musical Instruments, Seriously)

I need you to know that I am not making this up. The modern anniversary gift list, the one department stores helped standardize in the twentieth century, assigns musical instruments to the 24th wedding anniversary.

Musical instruments. Year twenty four. Nowhere on the list does anyone explain how this is supposed to work. I have been making personalized anniversary gifts for years and I have never once heard of someone marking twenty four years of marriage by handing their spouse a clarinet.

The idea buried inside the weird instruction

But here is the thing. If you squint past the literal instruction, there is a genuinely lovely idea underneath it. Twenty four years in, every marriage has a soundtrack. The first dance song. The album that played in the first apartment until the neighbors complained. The song one of you sang badly in the car for two decades until it became both of yours. Music is how long marriages store their memories, because a three minute song can hold a whole year.

So I read the 24th anniversary theme not as buy an instrument but as give the music a physical form. That is a brief I can actually work with.

The rest of the official package

For completeness: there is no traditional material for year twenty four on the old lists. The modern list says musical instruments. The gemstone is tanzanite, a violet blue stone found in exactly one place on earth, the foothills of Kilimanjaro. No agreed flower. As anniversary years go, twenty four is a strange little island, which is part of why I like it.

Gifts that put the soundtrack on the wall

A star map of the night of the concert, or the dance, or the show. Somewhere in twenty four years there is a night with music in it that both of you still bring up. The sky over that venue on that date, printed with the place and the day, turns a memory you can only describe into a thing you can point at. Around ninety dollars in the sizes most people hang.

A wood sign engraved with the lyric line, the title, or the phrase. I stay away from printing long copyrighted passages, but a short phrase that matters to two people, engraved in a good typeface on solid wood, does the job better than a full verse anyway. The compression is the art. Around sixty five dollars.

A timeline of the marriage with the soundtrack woven in. Instead of only listing the milestones, some couples list the song attached to each one. The year, the event, the track. Twenty four years usually produces a better mixtape than either person expects.

And if one of you actually plays, then fine, the list wins this round. A good instrument for a spouse who has been saying someday I will get back to it for fifteen years is a legitimately great twenty fourth anniversary gift. Just make sure the someday is theirs and not yours.

What I would skip

Novelty music merchandise, the mass printed guitar wall art and the like, which has no more of your marriage in it than a poster. Tanzanite jewelry bought out of obligation rather than affection for the stone. And treating twenty four as merely the year before the year. The silver anniversary is coming and it will be loud. Twenty four is the last quiet year of the first quarter century. Give it a song.
