Thirty five years in, the gift lists stop being useful. All three share the same problem: almost nobody makes a good 35th anniversary gift out of them. Real coral is a protected reef material. Dyed coral jewelry looks like exactly what it costs. Jade is beautiful and most American homes have nowhere obvious to put it.
What is the traditional 35th anniversary gift?
Coral. The symbolism is the useful part even when the material is not. Coral builds in thin layers over decades and looks like nothing much on any single day. That describes thirty five years of marriage better than most of the cards in the store. You can borrow the meaning without buying the material.
Should you actually buy coral?
No, and I sell keepsakes for a living, so this is not squeamishness. Harvested red coral grows slowly and trade in it is restricted in many places. The cheap pieces sold online are usually bleached sea material that has been dyed, or resin. You would be paying real money for something that fades in a sunny room within a few summers. If one of them dives, sails, or grew up on the water, use coral as a color and a shape instead. A coral pink in a print. A reef silhouette cut into steel.
What do couples at thirty five years actually want?
Something that goes on a wall, not something that goes in a cabinet. Our order notes at this year read differently from the notes at year five. At thirty five years a couple has finished acquiring objects. They own every serving dish, every frame, and three sets of towels they are saving for no reason. What they do not own is a clear record of the specific things that happened to them.
The four that come up again and again in this range:
A star map of the wedding night, printed in the deep blue that reads as formal rather than decorative. A timeline piece with five or six dates on it, which for a couple this far along usually means the wedding, the houses, and the kids. A family name sign with the established year, which at 1990 or thereabouts has started to feel like real history. Who is usually buying it?
The adult children, most of the time. That changes what works. When we get a 35th anniversary order the shipping address and the billing address are different in maybe two thirds of cases, and the note field says something like "do not put our names on it, just theirs." If you are the one buying, resist the urge to include yourself in the design. A sign that lists the whole family is a family sign. A sign for the couple should have two names on it.
Is coral pink too much for a wall?
In small amounts it works, as a full background it does not. We have printed enough of both to know where the line sits. Coral as an accent, in lettering or a thin border against off white or charcoal, looks intentional. A whole 18 by 24 inch panel in coral pink dominates whatever room it lands in, and the couple quietly moves it to the hallway. If you want the coral reference to survive the first year, keep it to under a quarter of the surface.
How far ahead should you order?
Three weeks is comfortable, and two is workable. Everything we make is cut and finished after the order comes in, so a personalized piece is not sitting on a shelf waiting. Thirty five year anniversaries cluster in the late spring and early fall because that is when people got married, and those are our busy weeks. If the date is in June, order in May.
One last thing from the production side. Double check the spelling of both first names and the year before you submit. We catch a lot of typos, but the person placing the order knows the couple better than we do, and a corrected proof costs a day.
